John Ray "Johnny Ray" Hughes

John Ray "Johnny Ray" Hughes, 84 of Cowan, Kentucky departed this life on Wednesday February, 28, 2024 at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

He was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky in a little community called Mexico on October 8, 1939 to the late John Hughes and Ivetta Jolly Hughes.

Johnny Ray was known as the Mayor of Cowan to many people of the Cowan community. No number could be placed on the amount miles he walked in his lifetime. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of God, he also enjoyed playing pool, watching sports on tv, hunting rabbits and squirrels, listening to country music, and enjoyed attending the Tilton barn dance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Colemire Hughes who passed away March 30, 2011; one brother, James Thomas Hughes; and one sister Jean Stephens; one daughter-in-law, Ann Frances Hughes; one brother-in-law, Arthur Stephens.

Survivors include one son, Ricky Hughes and wife Lisa of Ewing, Kentucky; one daughter, Tammy Brinegar and husband Ellis of Jeffersonville, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Amber Landsaw, Shannon Landsaw, Ellis Brinegar III, Sierra Estes, Belinda Hughes Bradley and Charlotte Hughes; fifteen great-grandchildren, Josie Watkins, Robert Bo Watkins, Evander Troy Landsaw, Wyate Lester, Brooklyn Riley, London Riley, Parker Koch, Keagan Martin, Braxton Koch, Jasper Riley, Drew Koch, Abraham Riley, Candon Koch, Toni Bradley and Holland Bradley; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hughes; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 2, 2024 in the chapel of the Price Brothers Funeral Home in Elizaville with Brother Rodney Pollitt officiating.

Johnny Ray will be laid to rest next to Pauline in the Dayton Chapel Cemetery in Pleasant Valley.

Visitation will be Friday evening March 1, 2024 from 5-8 P.M.

Casket bearers will be Danny Earlywine, Moochie Earlywine, Dean Mitchell, Darren McIntyre, Jeff McIntyre, and David Cropper.

Honorary casket bearer will be his great-grandson Kegan Martin.
