Melvin Phillip Mitchell, 81, of Ewing, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday morning, December 8, 2021 at his home.
He was born on August 20, 1940 in Fleming County, Kentucky, a son of the late Sterlie and Valeria Opal Glass Mitchell.
Raised a farmer, Melvin joined the Army in 1963 and spent many of his working years at General Telephone & Electric, where he met his wife Emma Carole McFaddin Mitchell.
He was an adventurer during this part of his life, and he often went skiing, deep sea fishing, traveling and golfing. He also enjoyed learning and challenging himself; he was licensed in boating, scuba, flying single engine airplanes, commercial driving, and real estate.
In retirement, Melvin spent his time farming and hunting on his family farm, which was very special to him. Religion was an important part of his life, and for many years he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He led many Sunday School classes, preached sermons at many churches, restarted Hilltop Christian Church and others, and led summer services at Fox Valley Lake for the last few years.
In addition to his wife Carole, Melvin is survived by his children Melvin Douglas Mitchell, Timothy Phillip Mitchell, and Kristen Mitchell Platt and her husband, Thomas, as well as, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Flemingsburg Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Boling officiating.
Burial will follow in the Elizaville Cemetery.
Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the W. N. Fant American Legion Post No. 5 and the Franklin Sousley VFW Post No. 1834.
Visitation at the Flemingsburg Baptist Church is after 12:00 Noon Saturday.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
